For Year 6 students who want to begin preparing early for the HAST and Edutest selective transfer tests — structured support with the question types, expert guidance and consistent practice.
This course suits students who want to begin preparing early, strengthen their academic foundations, gain structured support in navigating HAST and Edutest question types, and benefit from expert guidance and consistent practice.
What are HAST and Edutest?
HAST (Higher Ability Selection Test) and Edutest are specialised assessments used by a number of selective-entry schools (see the newsletter for participating schools) to identify students suitable for entry into Years 8 – 11.
The principal HAST assessment areas include Reading Comprehension, Mathematical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Written Expression. Edutest assessments may include Verbal Reasoning, Numerical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics and Written Expression.
Do students need training for the HAST/Edutest exam?
Training for the HAST and Edutest is strongly recommended, as focused preparation significantly improves performance. These exams are designed to be challenging, requiring speed, accuracy and strong reasoning under pressure, so even high-achieving students can struggle without prior exposure. Effective preparation builds confidence, strengthens weaker areas, and helps students feel ready on test day.
How does this course help?

- Guided practice, independent application and timed question sets within each subject area
What is the course format?
Students attend ten weekly three-hour lessons. Each lesson concentrates on one main learning area or a closely connected group of clearly separated assessment areas:
- Writing lessons: Weeks 1, 4 and 7
- Reading Comprehension and Verbal Reasoning lessons: Weeks 2, 5 and 8
- Mathematics and related Reasoning lessons: Weeks 3, 6 and 9
- Reasoning Transfer lesson: Week 10
Mathematics and the different Reasoning areas are taught as separate components, even when they appear in the same three-hour lesson. Writing tasks are completed in Weeks 1, 4 and 7 so that sufficient time remains for marking and feedback before the course concludes.

| 7 | Mathematics / Mathematical Reasoning — Further Mathematics instruction and applied multi-step, spatial and conditional reasoning. |
| 8 | Written Expression: Persuasive Writing — Position, audience, sequenced arguments, supporting evidence, counterargument, rebuttal and a complete persuasive response. |
| 9 | Reading Comprehension / Verbal Reasoning — Advanced Reading Comprehension and mixed Verbal Reasoning practice. |
| 10 | Numerical Reasoning / Abstract Reasoning — Advanced number relationships, pattern completion and mixed visual reasoning. |
